Kaia Gerber recreates mom Cindy Crawford’s 1993 Oscars look on the red carpet

Seeing double! Kaia Gerber (right) mimicked her mom’s 1993 Oscars outfit on the red carpet of the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12.

Kaia Gerber’s latest dress reminds us how much she and her mom Cindy Crawford are alike.

Gerber walked the red carpet at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 12 for the world premiere of her new film “Shell.” At the screening, the 23-year-old channeled her mother’s style at the 1993 Oscars, wearing a similar white, form-fitting dress designed by Hervé Léger.

In an interview with Vogue, Gerber stylist Molly Dickson explained the process that led to this moment.

“Kaia sent me a mood board for TIFF, and that was one of her references,” she said of the dress Crawford wore to the awards show with then-husband Richard Gere. Crawford and Gere divorced in 1995, and she married Rande Gerber in 1998.

“I thought it would be great to pay tribute to Cindy’s iconic moment,” Dickson added.

Like her mother at the Oscars, Kaia Gerber completed the look with a pair of white stilettos. According to Dickson, the model also reached for her mother’s personal jewelry collection to elevate her all-white look with vintage diamonds and a classic Omega watch.

Gerber currently stars alongside Elisabeth Moss and Kate Hudson in the black comedy horror film directed by Max Minghella.

The TIFF red carpet wasn’t the first time Gerber looked to her mother’s closet for inspiration.

In 2019, Gerber celebrated her 18th birthday wearing a black leather Versace ensemble with a gold buckle, similar to the one her mother wore to the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.

Crawford has spoken about lending her daughter more than just clothes in the past. In a 2017 interview with The Cut, Crawford recalled giving her daughter modeling advice.

“I just went to her first fashion season, and I think the only advice I gave her was that you can only sleep five or six hours a night or two nights in a row,” Crawford explained. “It adds up — take time to catch up on sleep and spend time alone.”

“I love this fashion world and all the experiences I’ve had as a model, but sometimes it’s just people touching you all day long,” Crawford added. “You need time when no one is touching you. You need to take your makeup off, put on some sweatpants and step away from the glamorous world of fashion for a minute or two.”
