Man dead, no officers injured in shootout with Glendale police

GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man was killed in a shootout with Glendale police Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred in the area of ​​56th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

Glendale police spokesman Jose Miguel Santiago said the situation began when a 37-year-old man showed up unannounced at a home near 56th Avenue and Thunderbird Road where a woman who had a protective order against him lives.

The woman, whose daughter was also at home, told several neighbors about the incident, who called the police.

Santiago said the man was in the house when the woman and child ran away.

The suspect was armed and threatened to harm himself and officers while refusing to leave the house, Santiago said.

Glendale police negotiated for several hours to peacefully remove the man from the home.

During the negotiations, Santiago said, the man fired several shots at the officers.

SWAT officers then broke down windows and doors, including the garage door, to use non-lethal means to force the man to surrender.

However, Santiago said the suspect came out of the house and started shooting at police, who returned fire.

He was taken to hospital, where he died.

Police said his family had not yet been notified of his death, which is why his name was not being released.

This is the 40th officer-involved shooting in the Valley and the 67th statewide this year.
