In short:

Police said a three-year-old girl suffered serious injuries and died after a car rolled over near South Hedland on Wednesday evening.

What’s next?

Western Australia’s Premier will call a meeting of road safety groups following a series of fatal crashes.

Police are investigating after a toddler died in a crash in the Pilbara region yesterday evening.

Just before 11pm a Holden Captiva left the road near the Great Northern Highway at De Grey, near South Hedland, and overturned.

Police said the three-year-old girl suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

Three women and two men in the car suffered minor injuries.

Police attended the scene in the Pilbara to investigate and have asked any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.

The incident comes just days after a car crash in west-central Washington state killed three people, including a young boy.

Last week, a 36-year-old man was also killed when his van collided with a truck on the Geraldton-Exmouth motorway.

“It happens almost every day”

Western Australian Premier Roger Cook described the latest death as “very concerning”.

“My thoughts are with the families and everyone involved, as well as the first responders who would have had to… witness these very distressing scenes,” he said.

“It seems like it’s almost a daily occurrence that we report on another fatality on our roads.”

According to state authorities, 116 people have died in road crashes in Western Australia this year – the highest number since 2016.

Prime Minister Cook said he had asked Road Safety Minister David Michael to convene a meeting with key road safety organisations to discuss the recent spate of fatalities.

“To see what else we can do as a community to reduce the number of deaths and injuries in our region,” he said.
