Firefighters extinguish a fire on Edmount Island in Ballinger Lake

South County firefighters had to deal with an unusual situation this morning: a fire on a small island in a residential lake.

South County firefighters battled a vegetation fire on Edmount Island on Sunday, with smoke visible near Ballinger Lake in Mountlake Terrace.

The fire, reported shortly after 5 a.m., burned a 25-by-25-foot area of ​​turf and other brush. Firefighters sent two boats to the area and used a floating water pump to power hoses. Firefighters also used hand tools to cut vegetation and create a fire line.

Smoke was expected to be visible in the area for at least several hours Sunday as firefighters battled the blaze. Firefighters were able to clear the scene around 10 a.m. No injuries were reported.
